Career in top gear: Why JTI’s ABA role accelerates sales success
When Kyra Gleeson first saw an advert for a sales job at JTI, she had never “carried a sales bag.” Her background was in logistics, care work and sport, but her friends said she could build rapport in seconds. Confident that she liked meeting people and enjoyed a good haggle, she applied and never looked back.
Today, twelve years on, the former Agile Business Adviser (ABA) is Agile Sales Manager for the North, leading twelve advisers across the North of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland, and was named 2023 Western Region Employee of the Year.
How the ABA role works
The ABA role is JTI’s talent engine. Advisers are deployed into areas that need fresh energy – plugging vacancies, tackling competitive hotspots or delivering brand projects such as Nordic Spirit activations.
Because they rotate every eight-week cycle, ABAs gain a panoramic view of the market in months, not years. Every adviser from Kyra’s agile team who has applied for a promotion to a Business Adviser role has been successful – proof that the job is a springboard, not a stopgap.
No sales experience? No problem
Sales experience is optional; the right attitude is essential. New recruits join a structured development pathway that flexes to the individual: a fast-track for those who fly, and extra runway for those who need it.
Trainers adapt for career switchers and neurodivergent learners, while a mentoring scheme pairs advisers with experts from functions such as finance to sharpen commercial instincts. Kyra credits mentoring and her own work as a Mental Health First Aider – with preparing her for leadership.
Variety, ownership and autonomy
Autonomy is another draw. Within each cycle advisers build their own call file, set their schedule and are trusted to spot opportunities. “If you hate being stuck behind a desk, this is 100 per cent for you,” says Kyra. “You’re out in the world solving problems, building relationships and making an impact.” The freedom to test ideas, and the licence to learn, keeps even long servers on their toes.
Culture that celebrates difference
Difference is celebrated at JTI. Kyra founded JTI UK’s Pride employee resource group and now sits on the global committee. Her team mixes twenty somethings with fifty something career changers – ex teachers, data analysts, sports pros – united by their competitive spirit and mutual support. “We celebrate wins however small and raise problems early, no matter how tiny,” she says. “It’s a culture that listens.”
Competitive rewards
The package keeps pace with the role: company car, market-leading pension, best in class health and wellbeing support and a host of flexible benefits to suit each individual’s needs and lifestyle.
“It’s the best decision I ever made,” Kyra says. “I’m still smiling – and I’m still not bored.” For driven self-starters who relish face-to-face selling, JTI’s ABA role is a launchpad to a career that accelerates as fast as they do.
